The National Institutes of Health (NIH) seeks applications from exceptional candidates for the exciting position of director of NIEHS and the National Toxicology Program (NTP). The deadline to apply is Dec. 23.

The NIEHS director, located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, provides leadership, vision, and direction for a nationally recognized program of the highest possible scientific quality.

Key responsibilities

Below are key responsibilities of the position.

• Formulate and implement plans and policies necessary to carry out the institute’s mission.
• Ensure that NIEHS has sound fiscal and administrative practices that promote accountability, effective monitoring, responsiveness, and flexibility.
• Oversee NIEHS collaborative research efforts with other professional groups, governmental and nongovernmental, to enable the most effective and scientifically rigorous ideas and approaches.

To support its mission, NIEHS has an annual budget of approximately $850 million and a staff of more than 1,450 employees, scientists, contractors, and others.

National Toxicology Program

In addition to its core NIH research mission, NIEHS hosts and administers NTP, an interagency program of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). NTP conducts and coordinates toxicological testing, develops innovative research tools and strategies, and publishes the HHS Report on Carcinogens.

As a coordinated effort among HHS components, NTP works in collaboration with other federal agencies, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Defense, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Required qualifications

NIH seeks candidates who have a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm, and innovative thinking necessary to lead a dynamic and diverse organization. Applicant qualifications are listed below.

• An M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant discipline.
• Experience and demonstrated ability in the administration and management of a major national research program.
• Broad familiarity and working knowledge of environmental health science research, including the importance of high standards for rigor and reproducibility.
• In-depth knowledge and personal research experience in one or more research areas of the institute.
• Experience giving presentations nationally to broad audiences.
• National and international respect within your discipline as an individual of outstanding scientific competence.
• Demonstrated experience in setting, planning, implementing, and analyzing program objectives and priorities.
• Demonstrated ability to manage financial and human resources and coordinate a research portfolio that involves extensive internal and external collaboration.
