NIEHS employees came together to raise nearly $100,000 for the 2018 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). These contributions, in addition to those at the National Institutes of Health, which totaled an impressive $2.2 million, will benefit more than 20,000 charities worldwide. The theme of this year’s CFC drive was “Show Some Love.”
“Big results like these don’t come without a lot of hard work and sacrifice from others,” said Janice Allen, Ph.D., a scientific review officer with the NIEHS Division of Extramural Research and Training (DERT) and a co-chair on this year’s campaign. “Thanks to the compassion of our employees, there are numerous charities out there who can now focus on their mission of helping others in 2019 rather than worrying about funding.”
An abundance of giving options
A cornerstone of the CFC is its expansive catalog of charities. The catalog gives federal employees the opportunity to select a cause that speaks to them personally, then earmark their donations to support its needs.
Among the causes receiving major pledges this year were disaster relief, children’s literacy, forest restoration, and cancer research.
“It’s amazing how far even the smallest of donations can go when they’re committed to a cause alongside hundreds more just like them,” Allen said.
As in past years, the 2018 campaign offered employees a chance to interact with the charities they support through a series of on-campus events, like the one held to honor Veterans Day.
“Through volunteer time and monetary gifts, we have seen a generosity of spirit from this institute like rarely before,” said NIEHS and National Toxicology Program Director Linda Birnbaum, Ph.D. “On behalf of NIEHS leadership and the CFC charities themselves, thank you for your public service and for your service as citizens of the world,” she told employees.
A culture of giving
Since 1961, the mission of the CFC has been to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee-focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for others.
Today, CFC is the leading employee giving program in the country, raising more than $5 billion in total for charity.
