Charity drive launched with high spirits

With high spirits, organizers of this year’s Combined Federal Campaign launched the fundraising drive for charities — from local to global.

It was with high spirits that organizers of this year’s Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) launched the fundraising drive at NIEHS. Their energy helped spread the word throughout the institute about the drive and the charities — from local to global — who are part of it.

The Oct. 24 kickoff, led by the Division of Extramural Research and Training (DERT), reflected the campaign’s theme of Show Some Love, as well as inspiration from the Halloween celebrations.

Just a few weeks later, a charity fair on Nov. 13 provided a chance for NIEHS staff and contractors to make personal connections with organizations they could support through CFC. Co-chair Katy McGinnis and others from DERT also participated in the institute’s Nov. 7 Veterans Day celebration (see story in this issue).

Serious needs abound

As Thanksgiving approached, DERT Director Gwen Collman, Ph.D., took a more serious tone with an emphasis on needs both close to home and at a distance. In a note to employees, she wrote, “[In North Carolina,] Hurricanes Florence and Michael caused unprecedented destruction. Sections of our state are still struggling with floods, safe housing, and safe drinking water. Additionally, there are fires and droughts in the western United States. “This is the time of year when our thoughts turn to the things for which we are grateful — family, health, career, and more. We should also think about those who need our support.”

Check out the slideshow below for scenes from CFC activities in October and November. Events continue in December until the drive wraps up at the end of the year.
