NIEHS employees and contractors saw to it that the 2017 Feds Feed Families (FFF) campaign ended strong with a rush of donations at its final curbside pickup August 30. In all, nearly 2,800 pounds of food, hygiene products, and other items were collected, with almost half coming in on the last pickup.
“Our partners here in the community expressed a real need for donations coming into this year’s campaign — more so even than in years past,” said Monya Brace, a member of the NIEHS Office of Management and an FFF co-coordinator. “With that in mind, we challenged our people at NIEHS to step up their game with giving, and boy, did they answer the bell.”
The items donated through this year’s drive help stock the shelves of the Durham Rescue Mission and the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
Helping the local community
Launched in 2009, Feds Feed Families helps food banks and pantries remain stocked during summer months when needs are high but donations tend to decline. In the years since its inception, the program has collected more than 70 million pounds of food for families across the nation — 12.5 million pounds in 2016 alone.
“I’ve been a co-organizer on this campaign for seven years now, and it never ceases to amaze how generous our employees are when called upon to help,” said Brace. “Times are tight right now for a lot of people, and yet they still make it a priority to give. By any measure, that’s impressive.”
NIEHS ranks annually as one of the most generous organizations in the Raleigh-Durham area, and is a top FFF performer among federal agencies nationwide.
