NIEHS Toxicology Liaison Christopher Weis, Ph.D., will continue his service to the American Board of Toxicology (ABT) in his new role as president-elect of the group’s board of directors. Weis was elected to the board in 2015 and will serve as president-elect until March 2018, when he will step up to the presidency.
“ABT in an important force in the field of toxicology,” Weis said. “This is a real honor, and I’m excited about working to assure that ABT adapts to rapid changes occuring in the field.” Weis mentioned that ABT is working to raise the visibility of certification by the board, which is internationally recognized as the most rigorous credential available in general toxicology. Practicing toxicologists who pass the certification test are named Diplomates of the American Board of Toxicology, or DABT, in recognition of their mastery of the field.
NIEHS and National Toxicology Program (NTP) Director Linda Birnbaum, Ph.D., congratulated Weis on his move. “I’m pleased to see Chris assume this leadership role,” she said. “It’s an important time for the field of toxicology, and I can’t think of a better scientist to take the helm.” Birnbaum is the first toxicologist to lead NIEHS and is also a DABT.
As one of Birnbaum’s senior advisors, Weis represents NIEHS and NTP on national and international committees and working groups.
As a federal scientist, Weis will serve in his own capacity rather than a representative of NIEHS, although the expertise and experience gained in his senior position at the institute will benefit those he serves.
